Summary : The power house at Skelton Park Ironstone Mine was built in the late 19th century from red brick with rock faced sandstone quoins and dressings and a tiled roof. It is a single-storey building, with a high basement on the north-west front. The original use of the building was to house an air compressor used to provide underground power for the Walker drilling machines and for an engine operating the endless rope haulage system. After the turn of the century the air compressor was disgarded and the limited demand for air was met by the installation of two electrically driven compressors and one steam driven compressor, all very small and out of use by 1930. The building was also used to house the Direct Current generating plant which comprised two Rosling and Appleby generators with A.C. motors. |
