PONTEFRACT BLACKFRIARS

DESCRIPTION + /

A house of Dominican Friars at Pontefract was founded in 1256 and dissolved in 1538. No trace remains of the monastery, or of the priory church of St Richard, situated at the west end of Southgate, near the junction of the Wakefield and Ackworth roads. Excavations have located what is thought to be the South side of the church, suggesting that the claustral complex lay to the North of the church. Foundations of other, unidentified buildings, have also been found.
