Summary : Outer gatehouse and attached precinct walls and barn 200m north of Priory Farmhouse (Formerly listed as Remains of outer gatehouse and precinct wall). The building consists of a two storey gatehouse with a vice in a polygonal turret attached to the southwest corner of the gatehouse. A narrow rectangular range is attached to the northwest corner of the gatehouse. This range is of the same height as the main block but is divided into three storeys. The two lower storeys, which were the accommodation for the porter, correspond in height to the ground floor of the gatehouse. The top storey seems to have provided a room attached to the high quality chambers above the gatehouse. The gatehouse is buit of squared and irregularly coursed sandstone. It was built in the early 14th century and was altered in the 19th century. |
