Hob Uid: 53665
Location :
North Yorkshire
Hambleton
Howgrave, Sutton with Howgrave
Grid Ref : SE3140079100
Summary : Remains of a deserted medieval village and medieval lordly residence. The village was recorded in Domesday Book and deserted by 1640. The site of the lordly residence was to the south west of the present Howgrave Hall, the building probably having been demolished in the mid 17th Century. Medieval terraced ground, hollows, ditches, banks, a hollow way, and building platforms, are visible as cropmarks on air photographs.
More information : [Centred SE 3137 7913] Howgrave Village [G.T.] (site of) (1)

Howgrave (315 793) The village was partly intermingled with
Sutton. In 1640 there was no inhabitant in the township. (2)

The major feature of the few remains of this village (surveyed
at 1/2500) is a well defined, sunken thoroughfare, average depth 0.9m, delineating its south western limits. Within the enclosure formed by this; the modern road; the buildings of Howgrave Hall; and incorporated by the existing parish boundary, is an area of disturbed ground containing no intelligible remains apart from one large house platform at SE3135 7195.
A probable original approach to the village from the north west is indicated by an extensive hollow way. (3)

SE 314 790. Deserted village of Howgrave (site of). Scheduled No NY/471. (4)

Deserted medieval village and lordly residence. The village was in existence pre-Conquest

Medieval terraced ground, hollows, ditches, banks, a hollow way, and building platforms, are visible as cropmarks on air photographs. They are centred at SE 3140 7911.

As identified by previous authorities there is a hollow way along the south-east of the site. Also on the periphery there are fields of ridge and furrow (SE 37 NW 71). In the eastern half of the site there are banks and ditches possibly defining further land units. A quite substantial bank defines the south-east of the site. At SE 3146 7914 there are possible building platforms; the largest and most complete being 14m by 12m.
