Summary : A former court house situated at Knaresborough Castle, built in the early 14th century with late 16th and 18th century additions, restored in 1830 and the 20th century, used as a museum since the 1970s. Built of coursed squared magnesian limestone and brick with a stone slate roof. The building is of two storeys and five bays with a single-storey, two bay addition to the rear. The benches and panelling of the late 16th century court room are retained in the third bay, on the first floor, as part of a museum display. |
More information : [SE 3489 5687] Court Ho. [G.T.] (1) The Old Court House in the Castle Courtyard. The middle part is 16th cent. but was added to later. A doorway on the old ground level is contemporary with the Castle Keep [Edward II]. (2) In the early 1960s, the Court House used was as business offices. It was enlarged and modernised in keeping with its main 16th c. fabric. See G.P. AO/62/93/3 for the N.W. aspect. (3) Court House of the Honour of Knaresborough, grade 2. The courthouse is in use as a museum: see website for visitor information. It has been a museum since the 1970s. For part of the 20th century there was a gardner's storehouse in part of the building, by 2010 this was no longer the case. The site is managed by Knaresborough Council. (8-9) |
