More information : [SE 3147 4308] Grey Stone [T.I.] (1) The Grey Stone in Harewood Park bears a carving of the 'cup and ring' type similar to the markings on the Panorama Stone Ilkley. The carving has a shield like appearance, with seven concentric ovals, and is 24 ins high by 21 ins. wide. By a classification of local cup and ring markings, the Grey Stone example appears to be one of the earliest in the district with a suggested dating to the early Bronze age. (2) Grey Stone is a boulder of millstone grit standing isolated on high ground. It has a base of 4.0 m by 2.5 m and is 2.5m high. The carving appears 1.0m from ground level on the N. side and is well defined. It is correctly described by Authy 2. See G.P. AO/61/169/4 for concentric ring markings. (3) Condition unchanged. (4) Grey Stone, a large glacial erratic situated in pastureland just below the top of a quite steep N facing slope, is basically as described by authorities 2 and 3. There are several large naturally weathered holes and grooving on the top and down the E and W sides of the boulder but on the SW side are about 8 or more small circular hollows 0.05 to 0.08m in diameter and 0.02m deep, which are almost certainly cup marks. A large piece of the S end of the boulder has split off. Published survey 1:2500 correct. (5)
