Summary : Medieval church constructed during the 15th century. It was restored in 1793 and in 1862-3 by Sir George Gilbert Scott. Well-coursed gritstone, Westmorland green-slate roof. West tower, nave aisles, south porch, chancel, north vestry. Perpendicular in style. Excavations have revealed original floor levels, 15th century tombs, Anglo-Danish carved panel, 12th century column shafts and early 14th century stained glass. A 10th century incomplete shaft or slab engraved with a boar was found in 1981 during conservation work on the south side of the chancel. |
