More information : SE 27807734 Sleningford Village [G.T.] (site of), Church [G.T.] (Site of) (1) Sleningford, a Domesday vill that became a grange of Fountains, damaged in 1363, by the Scots, after which the land passed to laymen. The village was destroyed again at an unknown date possibly, like its neighbour East Tanfield, for use as grazing grounds. The traditional site of the chapel shows up well in A.P.106 G UK 1305/4055 See A.Ps. 540/520 4375-6 June 1951) (2) O.S. siting confirmed. (3) The site of Sleningford village is visible only as vague traces of artificial ground disturbance. The area is now under pasture and lacks any intelligible or surveyable feature. (4)
A deserted medieval settlement and chapel are visible as earthworks and cropmarks on air photographs centred at SE 2774 7741.
A number of banks and ditches are visible as well as linear structures, some of which may be later parkland features.
At SE 2779 7733 are the parchmarks of the chapel. This is fragmentary and measures 6m by 12m. (5-6) |
