Summary : Earthworks purported to be the remains of Ingerthorpe medieval village are visible on historic air photos. These consist of a loose grouping of features to the east and south-east of Ingerthorpe Hall, which may include a possible toft, croft, stock pen, building platforms, paddock, and scarps, around which there is ridge and furrow. Some of these features appear to survive as earthworks on more recent air photos but some have been masked by recently established woodland. |
More information : [Marginal] Ingerthorpe, listed as a rejected or doubtful case. (1) Ingerthorpe, as is evident from the numerous mounds in which the foundations of buildings, fragments of stained glass, etc., have often been found was anciently a place of consequence. (2) The extensive soil and shadow marks near Ingerthorpe Hall at SE 291660 would seem to be those of the site described in (1) and (2). (3) Ground indications of depopulation are evident in the area surrounding Ingerthorpe Hall. Unconnected series of minor banks and baulks occur widely, the largest concentration being at SE 28956600, Rig and furrow ploughing is also apparent in most of the adjoining fields. The whole, however, forms no intelligible pattern, and does not merit survey action. (4)
