EPISCOPAL PALACE

DESCRIPTION + /

Site of the Archbishop of York's palace at Otley. There is documentary evidence of the site from 1216, the building was extended in 1415. The palace was occupied until 1606 and was ruinous by the time of the Civil War. Excavtions in 1973 uncovered pre-conquest timber buildings overlain by a stone apsidal chapel, that was incorporated into a two storey wing in the 12th century. A manor house was built on the site in 1780.
