Summary : Country house designed by John Carr and built 1762-67, possibly on the site of a fortified house, and replacing an early 17th century house designed by Inigo Jones. The present house is Palladian in style, built of sandstone ashlar with a slate roof. The central three bays of the main front are recessed behind a projecting portico of four giant Ionic columns, approached by an imperial staircase.
More information : SE 163 911. Constable Burton Hall is a fine house built by Sir Marmaduke Wyvill before 1760 from plans of J. Carr of York. The first mention of a manor house and park here occurs in 1338 when a licence to build a crenellated fortalice and impark woods were granted to Geoffrey le Scrope. (see SE 19 SE ) (1) Burton Hall (Grade 1). Built about 1762-8 by Carr of York. (2) A very perfect mid-Georgian house consisting of a square of beautiful ashlar stone. (3) SE 1635 9119.
