Summary : Now serving as an intermediate station on the Circle, District and Piccadilly lines, Gloucester Road station opened on 1st October 1868 as the terminus station on the Metropolitan Railway's extension from Praed Street Junction (west of Edgware Road) to Gloucester Road. The extension now forms a western segment of the Circle Line. Designed under the supervision of Sir John Fowler, the station was constructed from white Halsey perforated bricks with stone dressings, the windows and doorways set within high arches, and entrances sheltered by iron and glass verandahs. The station is comprised of two linked blocks; to the right the District railway booking hall of 1868 and to the left the Piccadilly Railway entrance of 1906 by Leslie Green. The former is two storeys high and constructed from yellow stock brick. An inscription in mosaic over the first floor reads: "Metropolitan and District Railways. Gloucester Road Station". To the left is a dark red faience block with a large arched window. |
