Summary : Railway station, opened in 1906 on the joint GCR/GWR line from South Ruislip to High Wycombe, (the initial stage of the line from Old Oak Common to South Ruislip was run by the GWR). In 1948 West Ruislip became the terminus of the Central line extension a new station was erected to the designs of Dr Frederick Curtis with Howard Cavanagh and RH Jones of the Architect's Office, British Railways (Western Region). The project started after the Second World War, but could not be completed for some years because of the economic situation. Temporary passenger facilities were provided and the platform completed in the short term, and the work on the road level station building continued sporadically throughout the 1950s. By the time finance was available to erect permanent structures Curtis's designs had become outdated and they were restyled and simplified by John Kennett and Roy Turner. The station, carried out in yellow and white concrete bricks, had a rendered ticket hall box supported by portal frames. The ticket hall itself was of double height with the upper floor of the street frontage completely glazed. Also along the street frontage was a splayed canopy. An overbridge linked to the ticket hall connects the underground station with the adjacent main line platforms. The station opened to serve trains on the Central line extension on 21st November 1948. |
