Summary : Richmond Station opened on 27th July 1846 as the southern terminus on the Richmond Companies six-mile line to Clapham Junction (the remainder of the line to Waterloo opened on 11 July 1848 and was built by the London and South Western Railway who had purchased the Richmond Company in 1847). The terminal station platforms were opened by the LSWR for ise of their own service from Hammersmith on 1st January 1869 and North London Railway trains from Broad Street. In June 1877 Richmond became the District Railway's southern terminus and four months later it also became the southern terminus for the Metropolitan Railway when, in competition with the District, a spur was opened from Hammersmith. Metropolitan trains ceased to serve Richmond in 1906 when the spur was closed. The current station dates from a rebuilding of 1930-31 and, at present (2003), is subject to redevelopment as part of a wider commercial development of the 'Richmond Station Site'. |
