Low Newsteads

Hob Uid: 50846
Location :
North Yorkshire
Richmondshire
East Witton
Grid Ref : SE1640085000
Summary : A grange of Jervaulx Abbey. There are two platforms South and West of the modern farm.
More information : SE 164852. Low Newstead, a grange of Jervaulx Abbey (SE 18 NE 1). There are numerous building remains to the east,
south and west of the modern farm. Alleged to have been converted to a vill in 1342. (Probable foundations visible on APs to the SW of the farm). (1)

The area around Low Newsteads shows signs of medieval cultivation in the form of field banks, rig and furrow, etc. There is, however, little evidence of Platt's 'numerous building remains' apart from two possible platforms previously noted on APs at SE 16448505. (2)
