Summary : Stables at Appleby Castle built 1652-53 by the Countess of Prembroke. These stand in the outer bailey north of the keep moat. They are of courtyard plan with the main gateways in the east and west sides. The east range and part of the south range are of two storeys and in 1934 were used for residential purposes. The remaining single storey buildings were, at that time, used as motor sheds, garages and cowhouses. There are entrances to the courtyard on the east and west sides. Built of stone rubble and red sandstone with hipped slate roofs. Listed building grade I. |
