Summary : Chigwell Station was opened on 1st May 1903 by the Great Eastern Railway on their Ilford-Woodford loop line. The brick built station had a pair of pedimented gables over the entrance to the ticket hall with stairways leading down from the hall to the platforms below. For the Central line projection from Liverpool Street, as laid down in the 1935-40 New Works Programme, Chigwell was to become an underground station on this new extension. When the station opened to Central line trains on 21st November 1948 it had been little altered apart for the retiling of the ticket hall and the extension of the platforms to accommodate eight-car tube trains. |
