Summary : The first station at Slough opened on June 1838. It was designed by Brunel as a 'one-sided' station. There were in fact two stations, the up and the down, 45 metres apart with sidings and wagon turntables between. In 1879 the Great Western completed its four track system as far west as Slough and a temporary station was erected. Underground services arrived at Slough in 1883 when a short-lived extension was introduced by the District Railway to Windsor from Ealing Broadway over the Great Western's tracks. This service was withdrawn in 1885. A new station was erected in 1886 to the designs of J. E. Danks. The station buildings were arranged in the Palladian manner with three pavilions linked by low roofs. The main building is in Second Empire style. Listed Grade II. |
