Summary : The monument includes the former gatehouse to Bolton Abbey which was incorporated into the 18th century Bolton Hall in the mid-19th century. The house was altered and restored in circa 1840-43 by Sir Joseph Paxton for the Duke of Devonshire. Constructed from ashlar under a slate roof, the south range is of two storeys and three bays whilst the gatehouse block is of three storeys and one bay. The north range is of two storeys and four bays with a three storey bay to the extreme right. The gatehouse block is of 14th century date with mid-19th century alterations whilst the south range is of a mid-19th century date. Listed Grade II*.

Bolton Hall, built in the late 17th century, incorporates the
gatehouse of Bolton Priory. [See SE 05 N.E. 1]

Bolton Hall (which flanks the north and south sides of the
gatehouse) has been externally restored, and now has a 19th c.
appearance. Modifications of the same period have also been made
to the entrance of the gatehouse thus enclosing it. The whole forms
one integral building, in good condition and of architectural
