Barden Tower

Summary : The ruins of a late 15th century tower house built by Sir Henry Clifford. Further remodelling was carried out between 1658 to 1659 by Lady Anne Clifford. The surrounding medieval garden earthworks and some of the quarry areas which provided stone for construction also survive.

Barden Tower, a scheduled ancient monument, was built in the time of Henry VIII and restored in 1658-9. It is now in ruins.

Barden Tower situated at SE 05085719 is a secular building typical of its period. Its ruins are well preserved and are three floors high. An inscription confirms the restoration of 1658-9. There are no associated earthworks.

Barden Tower Chapel, at SE 05115717 (now called Barden Church (a)), is a 17c. group of buildings incorporating domestic premises and a chapel, the latter being still used occasionally for public worship.
