More information : At Richborough, probably very late in the 4th or early in the 5th century, a church seems to have been built in the north-west corner of the fort. No mention of the building was made in the reports on the excavations in this area, but its presence is clear. The excavator did note a small octagonal basin which, on analogy with very similar structures on the continent, would appear to be a baptismal font. (1)

Excavations in 1923 in the fort uncovered a probable font and the footings of a probable timber church dated to the late 4th-early 5th century AD. (3)
