SKIPTON CASTLE

DESCRIPTION + /

Skipton Castle. The first castle was constructed in the last quarter of the 11th century by Robert de Romille. There is evidence for 12th, 14th and 17th century work. The castle was partly demolished in 1649 and rebuilt in 1657 to 1658 after it had been virtually dismantled during the civil war. The gatehouse was also rebuilt and the castle restored in the 17th century under the Countess of Pembroke. Excavations have revealed early phases of the castle's history.
