Summary : Cloister at St Augustine's Abbey. Documentary evidence suggests that Abbot Aelfmaer (1006-1017) built a cloister at St Augustine's and this probably marks the beginning of a formal layout on the site where previously earlier buildings had been placed at random in relation to the churches. The cloister in its final form was built by Abbot Thorne in 1276 on the lines laid out by Abbot Scolland in the 1070's when he was building the eastern part of the Abbey Church. To a large extent this has been confirmed by excavations carried out on the site.
More information : [TR 15455784] Cloister [NAT]. (1)

The cloister at St Augustine's Abbey was excavated in 1928-30 by
R.U Potts. Three successive layouts were revealed; Remains of an early cloister dating from c978 lay within the area of a cloister of c1050, which was rebuilt on exactly the same lines in 1276. (2)

It is reported that Abbot Aelfmaer (1006-17) built a cloister at
St Augustine's, of which foundations were discovered during
excavation. The cloister was enlarged during the Norman period
and much rebuilt by Abbot Thorne in 1276. (See illustration card
for plan). (5)
