Summary : Mound within Canterbury Cathedral Precincts on which a free-standing bell tower was constructed circa 1160. In 1382 this sustained serious damage during an earthquake. The tower was repaired 1383-84. It appears to have been in use until circa 1540 when Leland writes that it is "now a late clene pulled down". In 1972 the slopes of the mound were noted to be strewn with rubble. |
More information : Campanile Mount [NAT]. (1) An elevated turf covered platform. No trace of building but the slopes are strewn with rubble. (2) A mound in the Cathedral precincts was in existence by c.1160 and is shown in the Canterbury Psalter. The Cathedral campanile which fell in the earthquake of 1382 stood on it. (3)
