Summary : Suggested site of an Iron Age promontory fort, now destroyed by erosion by the sea.
More information : (Name at SZ 57877802) Roman Camp (G.S.) (1) At Bonchurch a portion of a Roman camp could till lately be seen. (2) There was no evidence for calling the earthwork, 'Roman'. (3) "Said to be no trace; possibly once a promontory fort". (4) No trace of this earthwork was found during fieldwork: it has probably fallen over the cliff as the sea has steadily encroached upon the land. The whole area around Bonchurch has been broken up by land movements and the possibility exists that some natural distortion of the ground has been mistaken for a man-made earthwork. (5)
