More information : (SZ 40609814) Grange (NR) (Remains of) (NAT) (SZ 40529821) St Leonard's Chapel (NR) (Remains of) (NAT) Barn (NR) (1) St. Leonard's large Grange with a Chapel, dependent on the Cistercian house at Beaulieu, founded in the 13th century. (2) Brief architectural description of the remains. (3) The remains of this grange comprise a chapel, a large barn and a length of probable precinct wall. The chapel is now reduced to a shell only. It has buttresses at all four corners with gable ends standing to their full height. A large east window, west window and door remain with two windows in each side wall. Together with the remains of tracery on the inner east wall, they appear to be of the Decorated period.
The barn measures some 68.0m. by 20.0m. externally but part of the south and west walls have been levelled. Where extant the wall reaches roof height and the gable ends each contain a very high window in Early English style. At the centre of the north wall is a blocked arch with corbelling for a now destroyed porch, but there is no trace of side windows. A much later barn has been built in its north-west corner. A length of stone walling, 85.0m. in length, to the north of the barn may be part of the original precinct wall. The modern farmhouse, St. Leonard's,contains re-used material from both buildings. Published 1:2500 revised. (4) St. Leonard's was a portion of the lordship of Beaulieu, granted by King John to the Cistercians in 1205. (a). The barn probably dates to the first half of the 13th century, though the chapel may be half a century later (b). The present farmhouse contains 15th century work.
