Summary : An Early Bronze Age bronze flat axe was found at Hengistbury Head in 1953 by a schoolboy while on holiday. It was two feet below the natural surface, east of "the old ironstone quarry", and close to a round barrow (SZ 19 SE 79). It is now in the Russell Coates Museum, Bournemouth (accession number 682). |

Very corroded but slight flanges visible. It could not be seen whether the axe was of the beaten or the cast type.

The axe, believed to be a French import, was found as described by authority 1, close to a round barrow (SZ 19 SE 79). The find may have come from a flat grave associated with barrow SZ 19 SE 89 or from another, now destroyed, round barrow. (3) |
