Summary : Site of a Bronze Age round barrow, excavated in 1920 by Harold St George Gray. He found potsherds including some described as `Food Vessels' from the northeast sector of the mound, but was unable to locate any burials. Also found were potsherds described as "non-Bronze Age" and some flint implements including scrapers. The finds are in Taunton Museum (perhaps). Ordnance Survey field investigation in 1954 recorded the barrow as a "very mutilated" earthwork mound 11.5 metres in diameter and 0.7 metres high. |
More information : (SZ 17209061) (One of a group of four) Tumuli (NR) (1) Ancient pottery fragments found, but not proved sepulchral in excavation (unpublished) by H St G Gray 1920. (Finds presumably in Taunton Museum) (2) A very mutilated grass-covered mound. Diam 11.5m Ht 0.7m (3) No change. 1:2500 published survey revised. (4)
Barrow 9 (Barrow E, Gray) A low mound originally c. 16.5m in diameter, now 12m in diameter and 0.6m high. No burials were located by Grey's excavation but pottery including a decorated food vessel was recovered form the northeast sector of the mound. Non-Bronze Age pottery and flint implements including scrapers were also recovered. (5) |
