Summary : Site of a probable Bronze Age round barrow near Hengistbury Head. It was excavated by H St George Gray in 1919. He was unable to locate any burial but it is unclear how extensive his excavation was. Some worked flint, including a scraper, was found. A telephone cable trench cut in 1958 skirted the barrow, and a collared urn was found, perhaps representing a secondary burial deposit? The finds from Gray's excavations are in Taunton Museum, while the collared urn is in the Red House Museum, Christchurch. Ordnance Survey field investigation in 1954 described the barrow as an elongated mound cut in two by a wall. It measured 22 metres by 17 metres, with no visible ditch (height not given). Its shape had prompted suggestions that it may have been a long barrow, but it seems more likely to be an irregular or mutilated round barrow. |
