More information : The medieval town of Poole was built on a peninsula, the neck of which was cut by a deep dyke, transforming it into an island. South of the dyke was built the town gate and a short length of wall (SZ 09 SW 20). A drawbridge spanning the dyke is mentioned in 1645-6. The approximate course of the dyke ran on a line from the Station Hotel to the Kingsland Crescent bus-stop. (1-2) The course of the dyke ran from about SZ 01249094 to SZ 01419088. The drawbridge was situated directly before the Town Gate at SZ 01249094. The course of the dyke and the site of the drawbridge are now built over. (3) SZ 01209091. Excavations at the Station Hotel located the late medieval tidal town ditch. There was no trace of a bank or wall, although timber stakes were excavated, in situ, from the filling of the ditch. (4)
