Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 456762

Hob Uid: 456762
Location :
Dorset
Corfe Castle
Grid Ref : SY9953081550
Summary : A group of 18 Bronze Age bowl barrows (and one Neolithic long barrow, recorded separately as SY 98 SE 14) on Ailwood Down. The barrows form a fairly compact cluster within an area also containing a number of pit-like depressions. These latter may represent quarrying or could alternatively be natural features. The barrows vary in size, and only a few definitely have surrounding ditches. In one case the ditch is interrupted by four causeways. Only one episode of excavation is known (during the 19th century), one of the barrows containing a cremation. See descriptive text for details about each barrow. The cemetery was last visited by RCHME in 1986. All barrows in the group are scheduled.
More information : (Centred SY 995815) Tumuli (NR) (seven shown) (1)
Ailwood Down group. Seventeen bowl barrows, and a long barrow
(SY 98 SE 14) on summit and S shoulder of part of Purbeck Hills,

250 yards long on the summit while the rest, including the long
barrow, lie on slightly lower ground immediately to S. Only the
two highest barrows (208 and 212) have continuous ditches. Some
others have quarry pits, probably original. All are under turf.
One, unidentified but adjacent, contained a cremation (W A Miles,
Deverel Barrow (1826), 15; Hutchins I, 689).

SY 997816. Group of round barrows on Nine Barrow Down. Scheduled.(3)
Centred SY 99538155. A close-packed group of seventeen round
barrows with an adjacent long barrow (SY 98 SE 14) occupy part of
the top and upper crest of Brenscombe Hill at 180m O.D. Most now
lie under dense gorse cover but three mounds at the eastern end
are under the plough in a regularly cultivated arable field.

A curious feature about the group is the number of pits which lie
either adjacent to or hard against the lower slopes of some of
the mounds. At least six of the round barrows as well as the
long barrow have such pits beside or near them; these pits range
in size and shape from a large amorphous depression up to 0.8m
deep to a small 0.6m deep circular pit of similar volume to the
adjacent mound. Their origin and purpose is not clear but they
are probably as suggested (2) quarry pits although it would be
most unusual if they were original features of the sepulchral
group.

The barrows all differ in size.

RCHME No. NGR.
201 SY 99438158 11.0m in diameter and 0.8m high.
202 SY 99458157 The mound is 16.0m by 14.0m and 1.6m high. The
ditch, well defined on the north side, is interrupted by a number
of pits; the gaps in the ditch are unlikely to be causeways.
Covered by dense gorse.
RCHM No. NGR
203 SY 99458156 9.6m by 8.2m and 0.6m high with an 0.7m deep pit
on the west side.

disturbed top.
205 SY 99508157 18.0m in diameter and 1.7m in height also with a
disturbed top.
206 SY 99518157 12.0m in diameter and 0.8 in height.

deep pit on the west side

barrow 208) up to 0.6m deep and a disturbed top.
RCHM No. NGR
213 SY 99618154 11.0m in diam., 0.9m high and spread by the

relationship is not clear.
214 SY 99648153. 16.2m in diameter, 1.3m high & spread by the
plough. The southern edge has been quarried and the top
disturbed.
215 SY 99578149 7.0m in diam. with a maximum height of 0.7m.
216 SY 99588146 6.8m in diam. and 0.6m in height.
