More information : [SD 8424 4768] Ancient Earthworks [TI] (1) This earthwork was named Bomber Camp by R.C. Musson who excavated it in July and August 1939. [See plan AO/LP/57/67 for structure and dimensions.] The whole internal area had been roughly paved with rounded boulders. A Roman occupation area, dated by pottery to between 300 and 375 AD., was found in the centre of the camp, other finds consisted of part of an iron sword blade, the top stone of a quern, and a stone pounder and spindle whorl. The camp is too crudely constructed to be a military fort and is in no way comparable to the two forts immediately to the north and south, Ribchester and Elslack. (2) Surveyed. The situation and non-defensive character of this earthwork suggest that the implication that it is some form of RB settlement site is probably correct. (3) Condition unchanged. Survey of 11.8.61. checked and still correct.(4) Bomber Camp Romano-British farmstead and associated enclosure. (5)
