More information : (SD 89143262) Tumulus (NR) Stone Coffin found AD 1886 (NAT) (1) 'Barrow on Hameldon Hill thirty feet in diameter and four feet above the surrounding soil. In the centre, in 1888, was found a large stone sarcophagus, about nine feet long in the interior. It is supposed to have been examined previously, as no remains were found. Many flint flakes and arrowheads were found here at the same time'. (2) Visited 18th July 1932. Tumulus much damaged with hole scooped out of its centre. Diameter 60feet height averaging 2feet 6 inches to 3 feet. In the central hole, four large stones may be seen which have probably been moved a good deal. They do not look very likely material for a cist. A very large number of white quartzite pebbles are to be seen in this barrow. (3) As described by authority 3 Surveyed at 1.2500 (4)
SD 8914 3262. Bowl barrow on Hameldon Pasture. Scheduled RSM No 23721. An oval mound of earth and stones up to 0.5m high with max dimensions of 21.5m N-S x 17m E-W. There is an irregular shaped hollow at the centre measuring 5m x 4m x 0.3m deep, containing two large gritstone boulders with a third a short distance away. These are the remains of the cist c.1.8m long by 0.9m wide investigated in 1886. (5)
