Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 452134

Hob Uid: 452134
Location :
Dorset
Winterborne Came, Winterborne Herringston
Grid Ref : SY6800086000
Summary : One of four round barrows excavated in the mid-19th century by Warne, whose locational information was rather imprecise, thus making identification difficult. Grinsell listed this barrow as Winterborne Came 18a, without trying to identify which of the known barrows it may be. RCHME suggested that the four barrows were probably to be identified among those recorded here as SY 68 NE 76, 77, 80, 164-172. SY 68 NE 78, 79 and 110 should also be considered. This particular barrow, Warne's number 11, was described by him as follows: "...the greater part, consisting of chalk and earth interspersed with charcoal, had already been carted away; the central part (a cairn of flints from ten to twelve loads) alone remaining...Disappointment however followed the displacement of the flints, for on the base having been laid bare, there only appeared a rudely cut cist, four feet in length, by two feet in width, and two feet in depth, which was filled with loose chalk free from any admixture." The other three barrows previously described here, Warne's 12-14, have now been recorded individually (SY 68 NE 173-5).
More information : Four round barrows on Came Down, near the Ridgeway,
(SY 6885) were excavated by C.Warne in the mid-19th century. (1)

One (No.11) contained a central flint cairn over a chalk-filled
cist.

Close by was a large barrow (No.12) over two flint cairns.
The lower covered six inhumations, contained an inurned cremation,
and was capped by a stone bearing carved concentric circles.
The higher cairn was similarly capped.

Two smaller adjacent barrows (Nos. 13 and 14), were among a
group of ten or twelve other barrows. They contained respectively
a cremation in a globular urn and an extended inhumation. (2)

The four barrows referred to by R.C.H.M. as having been excavated
by Warne are probably part of the barrow group at SY 68508590
(SY 68 NE 77) and/or the group at SY 68758625 (SY 68 NE 78) (3)
