Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 451879

Hob Uid: 451879
Location :
Dorset
Winterborne St. Martin
Grid Ref : SY6600088490
Summary : A bowl barrow on Hog Hill, part of a cluster of barrows located west and northwest of Maiden Castle (SY 68 NE 7 and associated records). The barrow is listed by Grinsell as Winterborne St Martin 34 and by RCHME as Winterborne St Martin 136. In 1953, Grinsell described the mound as "almost gone". In 1980, the Ordnance Survey described the barrow as a ploughed down mound 12 metres in diameter and 0.3 metres high, with no visible traces of a surrounding ditch. The barrow is scheduled, and in contrast to the above description, the most recent schedule amendment implies that the mound is at least 23 metres in diameter and 0.5 metres high. The other barrows formerly recorded here have been recorded separately. See associated monument records for further details.
