More information : (SX 91979265) Guildhall (NR) (AD 1330) (NAT) (1) There is documentary evidence for the building of the Guildhall in Exeter in 1330, and this date is assigned to the present structure, except for the ornate fore-building which is dated 1593-5. But there is earlier documentary in 1154-60 and 1234-53 for a Guildhall on the same site, and there is a reasonable likelihood that the hall of a Saxon Gild, known to have existed by 1000 AD, stood there also. The building now consists of a main hall, 62' 6" x 25' x 37' 8" high, and a three-storeyed Elizabethan projection in front, which projects over the footpath supported by columns. Until the suppression of the chantries after the accession of Edward VI, the hall contained, in a front part dating to 1484, a Chapel dedicated to St George and St Johnthe Baptist. (2-3) The Guildhall (No 203) I 1468-70, restored in C19 with the porch and mayor's parlour above of 1592-4. Scheduled Ancient Monument. Nos 192-203 (consec) form a group.
