More information : St John's Chapel [G.T] (Remains of) [SX 9152 7435] (1)
The remains of the chapel dedicated to St john the Evangelist, measure 58ft by 18ft. There are 3 lancet windows in the East end, and a further 8 and two doorways in the South wall. (a) One wall survives of the red sandstone chapel of Bishop Grandison's summer palace. It has small ogee-headed windows as befits its date 1332. (b) (The date 1332 quoted by Pevsner, appears to be based upon a letter to Pope John XXII, dated 1332, in which the chapel is described as `a beautiful structure'. Several writers have concluded that because the Palace existed before that date, the present chapel was rebuilt and not erected at this time). (2)
Oliver's description is correct, although early walling extends Westwards for approximately 60ft beyond the extent of the chapel to which the windows and doorways are confined. The wall is 4.0m high and of the windows three are blocked with modern brick. There is a stoup in postion in its North face. The whole is in a poor state of preservation. Ground photographs: AO/53/94/1 and 3. (3)
