More information : (SD 71651584) Stone Circle (NR) (1) (name: SD 71641586) Stone Circles (NR) (2) Stone circle first reported November 1878 (a). The removal of the turf in June 1893 showed it to be exactly 24yds diameter. It was faced both inside and outside by large flat stones and the intervening space filled by smaller stones. This encircling wall was an average width of 4ft and of very even construction. The removal of part of the interior surface of the circle revealed a number of stones with a large collection in the exact centre measuring 10ft across. (3) A circular depression in the ground 0.4m deep and 1.6m in diameter. Stones are embedded in the sides of this depression and loose cobbles encircle the lip. These stones are in varying sizes but average 0.3m by 0.2m by 0.2m. The ring of stones surrounding the central pile is most clearly defined on the W. Here a definite arc of loose stones can be traced, with a radius of 9.5m from the centre. This arc is in the form of a band, 2m in width, of loose stones, some embedded in the peaty soil and others laying upon the surface. These stones are similar in size to those in the centre. On the E is another arc of loose stones and there are small clusters on the N. A small quantity of stone is scattered within the W arc. The whole has been badly robbed and mutilated yet sufficient remains for the feature to be interpreted amongst the rock and stones that are laying about the surface. A 25" AM survey has been made. (4) Remains of a circular stone walled enclosure about 24.0m overall diameter. The wall is turf-covered and no precise width can be given, only a few definite outer facing stones are visible in the SE but it has been about 1.5m wide and 0.1m maximum height. No definite gap or entrance was identified. (5) Internally the area is flat and though there appears to have been a central stony mound this is so mutilated (probably by excavation and a modern cairn) no precise measurements are possible. This feature is not a stone circle but probably an enclosed cremation cemetery. Re-surveyed at 1:2500. (5)
