Summary : House, now farmhouse, with a timber-framed structure of 17th century date which has been largely rebuilt in brick in the 18th and 19th centuries and rendered in the 20th century. It is of a T-shaped plan with a total of four bays and two storeys. Garrett Hall was formerly the house of the Tyldesley family and may have replaced an earlier house on the same site. |
More information : (SD 70720159) Garrett Hall (NAT) (1) Formerly the mansion house of the lords of the manor of Tyldesley whose descent is traced to 1468. 'The Garretts' mentioned 1509. (2) The exterior of the E wall of the farmhouse was until recently of black and white half timber construction but was unsafe and pulled down a few years ago. In the central walls of the house are many oaken beams with wattle and daub filling. The greater part of the house is probably of recent date but a lot of the interior may be original(a). There are no traces of an older building in the exterior walls and no date stone is visible. Mr Patrick's assumption that the exterior is modern and interior original is probably correct. (3) |
