More information : (SD 75770218) Wardley Hall (NR) Moat (NR) (1) Wardley Hall is a quadrangular building formerly surrounded by a moat, of which only a portion survives on the W side. The earliest part of the present house, containing the great hall, may belong to the late 15th or early 16th centuries. The gatehouse was probably built in 1625. (2) Wardley Hall completely restored in 1894. (3) Building restorations are evidenced by dates 1734 on the S wing and 1904 on S wall of the E wing. The W, S and E sides of the inner quadrangle are of black and white timber construction. The moat is now dry, being visible to W and S of the hall. The small continuation added to the E arm (shown on OS 6" 1845-6) is now occupied by chicken runs and its W side can be traced as a gradual slope in the ground from W to E. (4) Wardley Hall; 1300 hall-type house, includes 16th and 17th century construction with later additions, Grade 1. (5) The Hall appears externally to be completely modernised. A linear pond extending along the W and S sides probably follows the course of the moat but there are no other remains. Published survey (25") correct. (6)
