More information : (SX 65625164) Court House (NR) (Site of) (NAT). (1) At the west end of Modbury are the slight remains of the mansion of the Champernownes, called 'Modbury Castle' by the Lysons. The Champernownes were lords of the manor and borough from the time of Edward II until 1700, and Richard Champernowne in 1334, had licence to crenellate his mansion at Modbury. A Champernowne held the castle for the Royalists in 1642, when it was taken by troops from the Parliamentary garrison at Plymouth. What remained of the old castle was sold for building materials in 1705, although a small part still survived circa 1822, said to have been a dining-room, but converted to a stable and hay-loft.(2-3)
