More information : [SD 6141 7392] Roman Altar at Tunstall Church. (1) "At the restoration of Tunstall Church in 1907, Mr. Anthony Moorhouse observed an inscribed Roman stone built into the rubble forming part of the window in the north-eastern corner, and revealed by the stripping of the plaster. No further notice appears to have been taken of the find until April, 1912, when Professor Haverfield visited the place and gave the following reading:- Deo [sancto To the holy god Asclep[i]o let Asclepius and Hygiae..... to Hygia ..cum s .. ...... Iul[ius] Satur[ninus Iulius Saturninus ...... (set this altar up). The altar found in 1907 is "...still in Tunstall Church where I have examined it; my reading differs slightly from Haverfield's (a)...cit. - deo sanc[to] Asctep(i)o [et] Hygiae et [num(inibus)] Aug(ustorum) VMS [...] Iul(ius) Satur[ninus...] The words, or word, immediately preceeding the dedicator's names defeat me : it is to be hoped that Mr. R.P. Wright will be able to produce a fuller reading of the stone in due course."(2)
