Summary : Base of a Roman milestone, reused as a boundary stone, though still possibly in its original position. |
More information : SD 630 761 "The remains of what was almost certainly a Roman milestone have recently been noted at Overtown". (1) A cylindrical shaft now only about two feet high and marked as a boundary stone on the Ordnance Survey 6" sheet Lancashire XXV NW (SD 6301 7609) at the point where the Overtown Cowan Bridge road makes a right angle turn, was recognized as the base of a Roman milestone by Lord Temple. It seems to be standing in its original position on the east side of the Roman road (RR7c) which continues straight on to Ribchester some 30 or 31 miles away. (2) A Roman milestone marking the 60th mile from Carlisle, and the seventh south of the Middleton milestone (SD 68 NW 1). It has been reused as a boundary stone and is somewhat flattened on one side suggesting that it could once have been inscribed. (3)
