More information : [SD 64614052] On the summit of a local rise on THORNLEY HALL FELL is a much denuded cairn. Despite the thick heather the perimeter can be traced for most of its length but is clearest on the south side. The cairn is c. 29.0m in diameter with a maximum height of o.5m. There are signs of recent disturbance a little to the north of the centre. There is no trace of a ditch, or kerb. Mr. JENKINSON, Hon. Corr. drew attention to this site. (1) The remains of this cairn have been surveyed at 1/2500. Its position is at SD 64534047 and its condition unchanged. See also large scale plan attached for detailed comments. (2) Survey of 23.1.62 revised. Burning off the heather has revealed that the cairn has a well-defined consolidated base. (3)
