More information : SX 489667 : Earthworks in a field to the east of Place Barton and to the west of the National Trust car park. Earthworks concentrated in the south end of the field. Building Platforms and trackways. (1) On the slight W. slope of a pasture field beyond which the ground slopes sharply to Place Barton to the N.W. and Buckland Abbey to the W, 200m. distant are three platforms and two terraceways occuring within an area of 0.25 ha. All are poorly defined, probably as a result of past ploughing. The platforms are about 0.3m. high and the scarps of the terraces, which are 3m. wide, are less than 0.5m. high. The clearest platform measures approximately 14m by 10m. internally, another 15m. by 5m., and the third, of triangular plan, has maximum internal dimensions of 10m. by 7m. One terrace, at the N.W. extremity, is 10m long and follows the base of a platform. The other set in an E to W direction is 45m. long and 6m. wide overall, the E half a terrace and the W half slightly raised. It seems to cut across the northern edge of the largest platform and could possible represent a demolished field bank. The platforms probably incorporated buildings originally, but whether of medieval or later date is uncertain. No structures are portrayed on the Tithe Map of 1842 (a). No finds were made. Surveyed at 1:1000. The survey was based upon one made at a scale of 1:200 by Dr D.Thackray, National Trust Field Officer, Saltram, Plymouth. (2)
