More information : SX 33088458 (1). The country gaol at Launceston Castle was described as "an old tower" in 1650. It was rebuilt in the 18th century, being described in 1774 as a small house and court 52 ft by 44 ft, (see illustration (4) with SX 38 SW54). It was abandoned circa 1840 and destroyed by landscaping about 1850. A trial trench cut by Saunders at SX 33078457 located the courtyard, with 16th century cobbled floors and foundations.
