More information : Circle (Stone?) (Centred at SX 24757755) (1) No trace of a stone circle. (2) APs examined. No evidence of stone circle. (3) No evidence of this rather enigmatic circle can be found in this area of fairly flat, uncleared moorland and considering its untouched character it seems unlikely that anything of archaeological interest has been lost since 1921. Either the reference produced by Crawford is very incorrect and should apply to some other circle, or it is a Breton abberation. (4)
The area indicated as the site of the supposed stone circle is profusely covered with boulders, of which a few are vertically set. These are not archaeological but could have been interpreted as a circle. Alternatively a nearby pound may have been what was referred to. (5) |
