More information : (Centred: SX 15367940) Remains of a 'ghost' village inhabited up to 50-60 years ago. (1) An extremely well preserved deserted village of approximately two hectares on the lower west slopes of Brown Willy. The remains of at least ten houses, some with garden plots, and six small buildings are visible. The walling averages 0.9m in height but is up to 1.4m in places. Surveyed at 1:2500. (2) A village of eight longhouses with outbuildings, enclosures and a complete strip field/system (see SX 17 NE 4). This village continued long into the post-Medieval period when some of the longhouses were adapted and other new cottages built. Finally the fields appear to have been split into three separate holdings and partially farmed until earlier this century. (Visible on air photographs but not shown on OS 3" Drawing 1805). (3-4)
Included in the published Bodmin Moor survey report as a settlement with post-Medieval desertion, with medieval elements surviving. (5) |
