More information : (Centred SX 08576582) Castle Canyke (NR) (1) Castle Kernick (2) or Carnyke (3) is a bivallate near circular earthwork enclosing about 18 acres. The inner bank is almost obliterated (2) Plan (3). (2,3) Castle Canyke is an Iron Age defended settlement of approximately 8 hectares. It comprises a sub-oval rampart, outer ditch and inner "quarry" ditch which encircles the top of a knoll (the south side of which is fairly steep with the rampart approximately 50ft below the crest). The original entrance is no longer identifiable, although MacLauchlan`s plan (2) shows it to be on the south-west sid; there are numerous modern gaps. The western half of the earthwork is fairly well preserved but the eastern part has been much denuded by ploughing. Published survey 1:2500 revised. (4) SX 08806482. During the construction of the new Bodmin by pass the edge of the hill below Castle Canyke was cut into. One chip of flint was found but no trace of structures. (5)
A geophysical survey revealed indications of features with the hillfort interior. Traces of an internal rampart and ditch were also located. (6)
