More information : (SW 92214487) St James's Church (NR)(site of) (NAT). (1) Founded in the 11th to 12th century by the Pomeroy family, St James's Church stood on the east bank of the River Fal which, at that time, was tidal. The building of Tregoney Bridge about 1300 caused the build up of alluvium behind the bridge which engulfed the church and finally led to its abandonment about 1549-53. The contents were removed to St Cuby and eventually the ruins were used as a quarry. No remains now exist. (2-3) "A little to the north of the bridge are part of the walls of St James Minor Church." The original OS siting was presumably from local knowledge or tradition. The area is now part of a featureless flat meadow. Medieval remains are incorporated in parts of the village (SW 93 NW (M), SW 94 SW (M), and St Cuby's church (built c 1828) has an early medieval font. (4)
